Live Message Wall: How Danmaku Turns Your Audience Into Participants

There is a moment at every event when the energy peaks — the music drops, the crowd cheers, someone yells something brilliant, and for exactly three seconds, everyone in the room feels connected. Traditional events let those moments vanish. EventWrist captures them.

What Is Danmaku?

Danmaku — the Japanese word for “bullet curtain” — describes the distinctive style of scrolling comments popularized by live streaming platforms. Messages fly across the screen in horizontal lanes, layered at different speeds, creating a dense curtain of community expression.

EventWrist brings this mechanic to physical events. When a guest sends a message from their phone, it appears on the big screen within seconds, floating across in a physics-based animation that feels alive rather than pasted. The effect is electric — suddenly every seat has a voice, and the screen reflects the room in motion.

The Host Console Danmaku Tab

From the Danmaku tab in your host dashboard, you control everything about the message wall. The Danmaku On toggle enables or disables the message wall entirely. The Blocked Words list filters out unwanted content automatically — any message containing a blocked word will not appear on the big screen:

How Blocked Words Work

Set blocked words in the text area — one word per line. Any message containing a blocked word is automatically filtered out and will not appear on the big screen. This is automatic filtering, not manual approval. There is no approve or reject button for individual messages. If a word appears in the blocked list, that message is simply suppressed.

This approach is fast, hands-off, and scales well. For most events, a small handful of blocked words handles the vast majority of unwanted content. You can update the blocked words list at any time, even during the event.

How Guests Use It

Guests scan their wristband QR code. Their phone opens a webpage — no app, no account. They pick an emoji avatar, enter their display name, and start typing. There is no character limit worth mentioning, though most messages stay short and punchy.

The message goes through automatically unless it contains a blocked word. If the message is clean, it appears on the big screen instantly.

What the Big Screen Looks Like

When danmaku is running, the big screen fills with floating messages. Each message shows the sender’s avatar, their display name, and the message text — all scrolling in smooth physics-based motion:

Why It Works Psychologically

Humans are social creatures who crave acknowledgment. A shy person who would never shout across a room will happily send a message from their phone. The message appears on a massive screen in front of hundreds of people — suddenly that person has a voice in the room without having to project it publicly. The anonymity of the phone removes the social risk. The publicity of the screen delivers the reward.

Key Takeaways

  • Guests scan a QR code and send messages from their phone browser — nothing to download
  • Messages appear on the big screen in real time with physics-based animations
  • Blocked Words automatically filter unwanted content — one word per line
  • No manual approval needed — automatic filtering scales to any event size
  • The psychological effect converts shy guests into active participants

Danmaku turns a passive audience into an active community. Create your first event and see what your guests have to say.
